A
Mira targetting at young women.
|
|
Daihatsu offers a variety
of Kei cars for different kind of customers. At the entry-level there
is the no-nonsense Mira e:S, targetting at budget buyers. Based on the
same underpinnings, it builds also a slightly pricier and cuter small
car for young working female. This used to be Mira Gino (a
Mini-lookalike) or Mira Cocoa.
These cars sold on a cute styling that is best described by the word
"kawaii", or cartoonish. Round eyes, chrome decors, pink body paint, creamy white
interior, they put Japanese young women in a stereotype. Unlike them,
the latest Tocot adopts a more restrained design theme. There is not a
single piece of chrome can be seen outside. It is shaped as boxy as an
appliance, but take more time with it, you will appreciate the quality
of its design. Not sure if it is inspired by the original Fiat Panda, it seems to have
the same beauty through simple geometry, coherence and perceived
solidity. The Tocot still targets at young women
drivers, but it might also appeal to boys – just don't order it in pink!

Not
quite as "kawaii" as before, but spend more time on it and you will
appreciate the quality of its design.

Naturally, the interior is more stylish than that of the Mira e:S.
While plastics are hard, color-coded dashboard, steering wheel and door
panels make it a cheerful place. The white gauge looks pretty elegant.
The center console looks modern, and the seat fabric gives a more
inviting ambience. The rear bench seat is not particularly spacious,
blame to the thicker front seats, and it is too flat for true comfort.
Luggage versatility is very basic, as the rear bench folds but not
splits. When it is folded, the load bay is inclined rather than flat.
Anyway, as the car does not target at family buyers, it is not expected
to take a lot of luggage.

Interesting
design, average practicality.

The driving dynamics is typical Daihatsu, i.e. mediocre naturally
aspirated engine, very slow, lots of engine noise at medium to high
rev, a passable CVT, very light steering and soft suspension. It is
easy to steer and park in city, just as most young women drivers want,
but roadholding and body control are seriously lacking, and the chassis
feels a little flimsy compared with some latest rivals. Not exactly a
poor K-car, but its talents are rather limited.
