European Car of the Year

Voted by 58 motoring writers from 22 European countries. Any cars on sale in at least 5 European countries that year and having expected annual production volume no less than 5,000 units can be nominated. This is recognised as the highest honour award for European cars.

Comment: traditionally favours small cars and does no justice to premium and sports cars, but European COTY is still the most recognized award around the world because it has the best cars involved. Voters are sometimes national-biased, but even so they are open-minded enough to elect Nissan Micra and Toyota Yaris. Winning this award usually guarantees success, but sometimes not, e.g. Fiat Brava/o, Lancia Delta and, oh my God, NSU Ro 80.

Japanese Car of the Year

Voted by industry insiders in Japan. Originally only domestic cars were eligible, now it is opened to also import cars.

Comment: in the country giving birth to Sony, high-tech cars are always preferred. Another finding: every generation of Civic seemed to be a default winner while Corolla - the best selling car there - never took an award. K-cars also seemed being ruled out.

North American Car of the Year

This is the highest honour award in USA, voted by a group of 48 top motoring journalists from American and Canadian magazines, newspapers, news agencies, radio and television. Normally announced in the North America Auto Show. Truck of the Year is also elected alongside COTY.

Comment: this is a rather new award, but it becomes decreasingly important as America builds more trucks than cars now. They don't have much choices.

World Car of the Year

Established in as late as 2005, World Car of the Year award has yet to get the global recognition it intended. One of the reasons is its failure to get the biggest-selling motoring publications involved. Theoretically, the juror panel consisting of 58 motoring journalists from 3 continents (Asia, Europe and America) and 22 countries should represent a fair judgement. However, not many of them are well known. Most of them are either free-lance writers or working in less significant publications.

Cars eligible for WCOTY election shall be on sale in at least 2 continents and 5 countries. As car makers often launch cars in different continents at different times, the winners of WCOTY award could be one year delayed compared with ECOTY, JCOTY or NACOTY.
